Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR)

High-speed railway services in Taiwan are operated by Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR), a private company under government concession.

The high-speed railway service commenced in 2007 with THSR 700T trainsets supplied by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Nippon Sharyo and Hitachi. The design was derived from the 700 Series Shinkansen trainset used by JR Central and JR West, and it marked the first time Shinkansen technology was exported outside Japan.

In the present, THSR trains run at a top speed of 300 km/h along the West coast of Taiwan, connecting the capital Taipei with the southern city of Kaohsiung in less than 1 hour 45 minutes.
