Book your train tickets with JR East.
JR East is the regional railway operator in eastern Japan, connecting Tokyo, Nagano, Niigata, Fukushima, Yamagata, Sendai, Morioka, Akita and Aomori.
Trains operated by JR East
JR East operates the Shinkansen high-speed railway service with trains running at a maximum speed of 240–320 km/h.
- - Tohoku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Aomori
- - Akita Shinkansen between Tokyo and Akita
- - Yamagata Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shinjo
- - Joetsu Shinkansen between Tokyo and Niigata
- - Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Tsuruga
Shinkansen trains carry Green Cars with business class seats and Ordinary Cars with standard class seats distributed in Reserved and Non-reserved seats. In total, Shinkansen trains offer three passengers classes: Green Car Seat, Reserved Seat and Non-reserved Seat.
JR East also operates many intercity and regional lines with trains running on conventional rail at a maximum speed of 130-160 km/h.
Conventional rail services are classified depending on the stop pattern:
- - Limited Express is the fastest service stopping at major stations
- - Express is a semi-fast service stopping at major stations
- - Rapid is a fast service stopping at most stations
- - Local is a slow service stopping at all stations
When travelling on conventional rail, the standard ticket or the rail pass allows the passenger to access the platform and board Limited Express trains as well as Express, Rapid or Local trains.
On Limited Express trains, passengers can travel on Non-reserved Seat or Reserved Seat. In case of travelling on Reserved Seat, passengers are required an extra ticket for the Reserved Seat, which is purchased separately from the standard ticket and is inspected by the train conductor on board.

Reviews
Having experienced gran car of course this was below it. We were a bit disappointed that no free drink or snack was offered. And no hot drinks, only black coffee Jeanette
Easy comfortable and relaxing Jeanette
Train was delayed by over 40 minutes leaving all the passengers including myself with no other choice but to get a local train to Nagano. This meant my transfer window from Nagano to Tokyo of half an hour was missed and thereby my trip back on that particular Shinkansen. However, to their credit, the JR staff officials at the ticket gate were extraordinarily helpful and reissued me a new Shinkansen ticket to Tokyo right away and the delay only cost me 50 minutes in total. Michael
Absolutely seamless journey ! So easy to book ! Kirsty
I felt that the time allowed between both rail journeys was not enough for me to comfortably navigate Tokyo station to get from the end of the Shinkansen journey, collect my ticket from a machine, and then find my way to the Narita Express platform. David
Everything went perfect. Easy to retreive tickets, and train on time. Per
The provision of available alternative trains was much appreciated. Jonathan
Very user friendly website; ticket pickup easy. Gary
Excellent journey but carriage far too hot and with no way to alter it Stuart
Our experience was great, everything was as we expected and customer service was very helpful finding alternate trains when our original requested trains were not available. Jason
Multiple bookings with Baolau, all handled excellently and when needed the service has been superb. Answering questions, helping me with a change, etc. Brilliant company David
The train was very comfortable George
Tickets were as expected Aidan
Efficient. Belinda
It was very fast. Because we arrived early in the day, we were able to squeeze another excursion on the day. We were glad we didn’t take a bus to save money. Yumiko
Seamless, and straightforward. Very happy with the experience. Mehdi
Train was on time, clean and it had a view of Mt Fuji! Christopher
Would be 5 stars except it does take a long time to get the ticket email after confirmation. Christopher
Customer support excellent. Quick communication from your team. Philip
As expected in Japan the train was on time, clean and the journey was smooth. Maxine
Very efficient Sophie
The train was delayed for more than one and a half hours at Tokyo Station. Kok

Great service Jonathan
A very nice service - you dealt with my booking change very quickly and so very polite. Thank you. Richard
So easy to book and the instructions were clearly laid out for us to exchange our vouchers and get the tickets. Sandrine
Amazing experience travelling the Shinkansen Gran Class on the Hayabusa train Peter
Really happy with booking Shinkansen tickets on Baolau. Unfortunately, Japan Rail doesn't make it easy to purchase tickets online (if it's even possible at all), but Baolau made it a breeze. Picking up tickets on the day of travel only required scanning a QR code at the station. Very easy. Thanks! Michael
The step by step pick up instructions were very helpful. Thank you. Sally
Baolau we’re very helpful when there we’re limited seats available to be able to sit together with our group, instead of just booking separate seats for everyone they gave me 2 other options which worked out great. I really appreciated the consideration so that we could all sit together and enjoy our train ride. Hannah
Very well Antoine
Super easy and convenient to pick-up with we code! Ian
Rien à dire, tout a été parfait du début à la fin. Jeanphilippe
