- - Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR), high-speed rail
- - Taiwan Railways (TRA), conventional rail
Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR)
High-speed railway services in Taiwan are operated by Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR), a private company under government concession.
The high-speed railway service commenced in 2007 with THSR 700T trainsets supplied by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Nippon Sharyo and Hitachi. The design was derived from the 700 Series Shinkansen trainset used by JR Central and JR West, and it marked the first time Shinkansen technology was exported outside Japan.
In the present, THSR trains run at a top speed of 300 km/h along the West coast of Taiwan, connecting the capital Taipei with the southern city of Kaohsiung in less than 1 hour 45 minutes.
THSR trains are classified in different series depending on the stop pattern:
- - 1xx Series trains run the whole line stopping only at Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung stations
- - 2xx, 12xx, 3xx, 13xx Series trains run the whole line stopping at the major stations
- - 5xx, 15xx Series trains run only half of the line, between Taipei-Taichung and Taichung-Kaohsiung
- - 6xx, 16xx Series trains run the whole line stopping at most of the stations
- - 8xx Series trains run the whole line stopping at all stations
3-digit numbers indicate that the service is daily, whereas 4-digit numbers indicate that the service operates on particular days of a week. Trains running southbound carry an odd number and trains running northbound carry an even number.
THSR trains are powered by electric multiple units and consists of 1 business car and 11 standard cars.
Business Seats
Standard Seats
THSR trains offer two passengers classes: Reserved Seat for Business Seats and Standard Seats, which can be booked in advance, and Non-reserved Seat for Standard Seats, only sold on the same day as departure.
