THE SILK ROAD

Stand at the crossroad of civilizations.

During the 13th and 14th centuries Beijing was the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, when the capital was known as Khanbaliq. After the collapse of the Yuan dynasty, the Forbidden City was built and served as the imperial palace for the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Buddhism arrived to China through the Silk Road and the religious art of Central Asia met the Chinese traditions and philosophies, a fusion represented in the Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple in Datong.

Known as Chang'an throughout much of its history, Xi'an was the capital of the early Chinese imperial dynasties and marked the starting point of the Silk Road that connected China with Central Asia.

CHENGDU AND CHONGQING

Then and now, the gateway to the West.

Chengdu has historically been a key city in western China serving since ancient times as a gateway for commerce, culture and religion.

Its proximity to Mount Emei, considered the site where Buddhism first became introduced in China, made it a vital center for the establishment of religion. In the present, pilgrims can climb to the submit and visit the monasteries or stand before the awe inspiring Leshan Giant Buddha carved more than a millennium ago.

Chongqing is the modern gateway to the West due to its strategic location as a transportation and logistic hub on the Yangtze River and the China-Europe freight rail route. The city rises with modern skylines above the confluence of two rivers.
