What types of trains operate the route from Osaka to Kyoto?

There are two types of trains connecting Osaka to Kyoto: Shinkansen trains and Limited Express trains.

The Tokaido Shinkansen high-speed train runs between Osaka and Tokyo, stopping in Kyoto.

There are three types of services on the Tokaido Shinkansen: Nozomi is the fast service stopping only at key stations, Hikari is the semi-fast service stopping at the major stations and Kodama is the local service stopping at all stations.

Shinkansen trains can carry up to 16 cars per train, arranged in Green Cars with business class seats and Ordinary Cars with standard class seats distributed in Reserved and Non-reserved. In total, the Shinkansen trains offer three passengers classes: Reserved Seat (Green Car), Reserved Seat (Ordinary Car) and Non-reserved Seat.

Travellers with Reserved Seat tickets are required to take their numbered seat in the Green Cars or the Ordinary Cars. Travellers with Non-reserved Seat tickets are allowed to take any seat available only in the Ordinary cars designated as Non-reserved. On these cars, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. When all the seats are full, passengers must travel standing.

Additionally, there are many Limited Express trains operated by JR Central and JR West crossing from Osaka to Kyoto:

  • - The Limited Express Hida runs between Osaka and Takayama, stopping in Kyoto.
  • - The Limited Express Thunderbird runs between Osaka and Kanazawa, stopping in Kyoto.
  • - The Limited Express Biwako runs between Osaka and Maibara, stopping in Kyoto.
  • - The Limited Express Haruka runs between Kansai Airport and Kyoto, stopping in Osaka.
  • - The Limited Express Kuroshio runs between Wakayama and Kyoto, stopping in Osaka.
  • - The Limited Express Super Hakuto runs between Tottori and Kyoto, stopping in Osaka.

How much does it cost to get from Osaka to Kyoto by train?

The train ticket with JR costs 1,440 JPY for Non-reserved Seat on all Shinkansen trains, 2,860 JPY for Reserved Seat (Ordinary Car) on Hikari and Kodama trains, 3,070 JPY for Reserved Seat (Ordinary Car) on Nozomi trains, 3,630 JPY for Reserved Seat (Green Car) on Hikari and Kodama trains, and 3,840 JPY for Reserved Seat (Green Car) on Nozomi trains.

For trains operated by JR, travellers can book online and pick up the tickets at the station by scanning the QR code included in the electronic ticket at the ticket vending machines. For more information, please read the instructions to pick up the tickets at the station.

The train ticket with JR Central costs 1,230 JPY for Non-reserved Seat and 1,760 JPY for Reserved Seat (Ordinary Car) on all Limited Express trains. For trains operated by JR Central, travellers can book the tickets directly at the station.

The train ticket with JR West costs 1,230 JPY for Non-reserved Seat, 1,760 JPY for Reserved Seat (Ordinary Car) and 2,530 JPY for Reserved Seat (Green Car) on all Limited Express trains. For trains operated by JR West, travellers can book the tickets directly at the station.

Where does the train from Osaka to Kyoto depart?

Trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen line depart from Shin-Osaka Station, Yodogawa-ku, Osaka.

Limited Express trains depart from Shin-Osaka Station and Osaka Station, in Osaka.
